THE LUCAS MEDICAL DEPARTMENT
As I emember it - by ex-Sister Valerie Baldwin
In March 1958 when I first joined Joseph Lucas Limited
(as it was then known) at Shaftmoor Lane, the Surgery
(again as it was then known) was based in the Centre Drive,
just past theBW4 entrance. I worked for the
Lucas Group with two breaks to have my children until I retired
from Shaftmoor Lane on Thursday 23rd December 1999.
The then new, Lucas Medical Department was in a building
with three floors, constructed in 1961/62 by Whittall's Construction
Limited - this building was demolished in 2003. It was built on land
formerly being used as a car park and general utility area and a small
Lucas Home Guard Club. During the construction of the building, a
number of problems occurred. One of these was a collapse of the
first floor into what would eventually be the Medical Department.
The building contained on the ground floor, the Medical Department,
the Human Resources Department ( formerly known as the Personnel
Department ) the Directors Dining Room and Kitchen, Senior Staff Dining
Room and Kitchen. On the first floor was the Staff Dining Room and kitchen,
the Dining room and Kitchen for the work force was on the top floor
Doctor Tom McCormack being the current Doctor, was in charge of
the new Medical Department. he retired in approximately 1978.
The first Sister was Ivy Dalgarno ( Later Ivy Swith ), who retired in 1970.
They had a staff of ten nurses and a First Aider Phoebe, to cover 3 shifts
The new Medical Deptment was very impressive with thick glass double
doors opening into a reception area, leading off the reception area was the
Doctor's office, Secretary's Office, Optician/Chiropody Treatment room,
X-Ray Room, Stock Room and Toilets, Male Treatment Room,Nurses Sitting
Room, Female Treatment Room, Physiotheraphy Treatment Room
The Medical Department was also supplied with a white painted estate
type vehicle converted into a Company ambulance, together with a
member of the Fire/Security who also doubled as the driver.
